Designing for Wellbeing- The Art of Holistic Interior Design- Dezyna Interiors

Traditional interior design focuses on creating visually appealing and functional spaces, but holistic interior design goes beyond aesthetics to consider the well-being of the mind, body, and soul. It combines the practices of biophilic design (essentially bringing Nature indoors), colour psychology, human biology, and ergonomics, to name a few.

I naturally approach my clients’ interiors from a holistic point of view- I would not be doing my job as an interior design professional if I did not pay keen attention to the requirements (spoken and unspoken) of my clients. For my clients’ benefit, I’ve learned the importance of considering not only the positive effects of interior design on a space but also the powerful impact holistic design can have on both the space and its inhabitants.

Holistic design incorporates not only the physical elements of the space, such as lighting and furniture. It also addresses the emotional and spiritual aspects, such as the energy flow and the space’s connection to Nature. It aims to create a beautiful interior that promotes relaxation, harmony, and a sense of well-being and has a considered use of materials. Plants and items made of natural materials like wood and stone are often incorporated to create the connection to Nature.
In holistic design, careful consideration is also given to natural light, ventilation, and elements like colour, texture, and pattern. These details work together to create a cohesive, balanced environment that should feel functional and harmonious.

Though not always possible, I prefer to include as many environmentally friendly, locally sourced and sustainable products and finishes into my clients’ interiors as possible- thus having a positive impact on the environment, too.

From homes, mindfulness spaces (like meditation rooms and sanctuaries) and home offices to corporate offices and even retail and commercial spaces, holistic design is truly an ‘all-in-one’ type approach to design. It is a detailed formula that can be tailored to your unique interior and has numerous benefits that I will explore in more detail here.

It’s well-known that our environments have a direct impact on all aspects of our being; isn’t it time that you invested in your space and ultimately, yourself?
